First day in San Juan

This morning, we left the house at 3AM to catch a 5AM flight from Phoenix to San Juan. Thank you Naman (my brother), we were flying first class. I could get used to flying first! There were no issues with checking in the bike. It was a smooth process (after paying United $100 to check-in a bike).

I saw a movie on the plane called Cloud Atlas. It is about the space and time continuum and the spiritual connections between us all. The first 30 minutes of the movie are quite confusing as you try to weave and connect events between the 19th, 20th, 21st and 22nd centuries. Halle Berry is excellent. Tom Hanks and Hugh Grant are Tom Hanks and Hugh Grant (I am not a fan of either). The movie is pretty long, and gets a bit boring in the middle, but overall is a solid 6 on a scale of 10. It does keep you on your toes…and makes you wonder.

View of San Juan from our room at the Hilton Caribe

Anyway, we are here in San Juan and checked in at the Hilton Caribe. The city reminds me of Mumbai. Older buildings, chaotic traffic, heat, humidity, palm trees, greenery, tropical! The bike (Therapy) has arrived in one piece. I have already put it back together, but haven’t take it out for a ride. Our room has an excellent view of the ocean where Binita can actually see the swim start sitting on the balcony. In the picture above, the swim start will be sorta behind the bridge on the right; and we will swim under the bridge before finishing. There is an Ironman buzz at the hotel. Most of the guests are wearing something or the other that says Ironman. Tomorrow, I will register and get my bib.

I haven’t slept well in 3 nights now. I better get some good sleep tonight and wake up late tomorrow, else I will get sick (which would be really bad). We have no real agenda tomorrow (perfect)! It will be a short, quick workout, work a bit, eat and rest. I remain nervous and excited.

  1. You're going to do AWESOME my friend! 🙂 Just got an Irish Blessing that will be fitting for you to keep in mind on Sunday…

"May your blessings outnumber the shamrocks that grow, and may trouble avoid you wherever you go!"

    Cheers from AZ. KB

  2. Yea. Avoid trouble. Avoid bike issues and avoid the bonk. Now I have to wear something green!
