As I recover from running the Boston Marathon, I am resting these few days. I think back to the time I qualified for Boston in March 2014 at the Phoenix Marathon where I had the race of my life. A few days after that race, my calf muscles started to hurt. They got worse for a few days to the point where I could barely walk. As soon as they got a bit better, I was back into training. That was probably the onset of DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis) in my legs. Later that same month, I ended up doing the Ironman in Cabo, a race I should have dropped out from. While we can’t be sure, severe dehydration during the Ironman compounded with heat, humidity and hills; further compounded by my already hurting legs lead to PE (Pulmonary Embolism). Hindsight is 20-20! I listen to my body closely now and avoid training if I am hurting.
This picture is from the official Boston Marathon 2015 poster. It is double-sided with all participant names on it. This image is a close-up of my name which happens to be smack-dab in the middle of the poster!
I will start running and spinning tomorrow to loosen my legs. I am barely sore now, but it will take me about a month to fully recover. My next race is the Seattle Half Marathon in June. Before the race though, we have a family vacation planned in Rhodes, Greece and Paris, France.
