Another day in Chicago and travel to India

I spent the day in Chicago with Sande and Kevin today. They are wise to live in a lovely apartment on Lakeshore with a gorgeous view of Lake Michigan. An exhilarating sunrise (pictured above) greets them every morning. I saw mergansers swimming and diving in the lake and a few stray seagulls. It was all perfect.

When I woke up, Sande was already up relaxing in the living room. She has gone through some medical issues lately but is well on her way to recovery. She tore her Achilles tendon and had surgery to repair it in early November. At our age, recovery from any surgery is a slow, laborious process. Yes, yes, I know that I am the only one not getting any older (yes, I am delusional). In December, she had a bout with staph infection and is still fighting it.

At breakfast, Sande and I talked about life, love and old friends. She is in touch with most of them. I have completely lost in touch with Mark, Sue, Mark, Dan, Chris, Lori and the rest of the crew in Columbus, but was glad to hear that they are all doing well. We were nostalgic talking of old times, old friends and the good old days at KPMG.

We spent the afternoon back at their place with Kevin working (or at least pretending to work). It was a mellow, soothing, comfortable afternoon. When you are with friends you love, things come naturally and easily. I’ve always been fond of Sande and Kevin. Some things never change!

As I write this, I am on the flight to Frankfurt. It’ll be a long day flying to India. I’m usually super-excited when I go back home, but this time, it is tempered. I really wanted Binita to come with me. We travel well together. We both love to explore places and experience cultures. This time in India, I will visit Odisha (formerly known as Orissa) for the first time. It’ll be a good time mixed in with visits to a bird sanctuary, a few temples and a few orphanages.

I better get some sleep now…
